So I'm a complete newbie to Maya, using my student account to download the program, and I started learning a week or so ago via Lynda. I was using Maya 2017, along with the Maya 2017 Lynda course, and things were going well (Maya popped an error when installing, but seemed to work fine, despite that) until I began loading planes with an image file as a texture - both my work files and the examples from the course don't load them. Since having the textures is a major part of the chapter I'm in, I've tried installing and reinstalling Maya. I decided to give up on 2017, and decided maybe I can do the 2016 class, so I install Maya 2016. No errors on install, but opening any file pops an error, 'Errors have occurred while reading this scene that may result in data loss.
Please check the Script Editor for details.' This is even files downloading for the 2016 class.
Is there anything I can do to fix this? It seems like Maya is not at all compatible with mac OS. I've been looking for information online, and am seeing some posts suggesting 2016 and 2017 simply aren't compatible with Sierra, but it seems like mixed messages. I've got a windows 10 gaming tower I can run Maya on, but would much, much rather use my Mac laptop. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Sorry, I had 2017 uninstalled so couldn't pull the errors from it, though I included the 2016 error (I guess I should have dug into the script editor, but I haven't really used it yet - the 2017 errors pop up automatically). The install error is the one; I could still run the app, so didn't think anything of it.
The other errors are here: Error file: /Applications/Autodesk/maya2017/Maya.app/Contents/scripts/others/hikCharacterControlsUI.mel line 329: Object 'hikCharacterList OptionMenu' not found. But I don't have the Mac path in front of me (and I think resetting the toolbox fixed it). Mostly importantly, I don't get an error, but the textures from the lesson files (and when I create the lesson files by hand), don't load. It doesn't seem to pop a specific error in this instances. Specifically, I wonder if Maya's compatible with Sierra, the latest version of Mac OS. It looks like your Maya is looking in the 2017 prefs/folders when it's throwing the hikCharacterControlsUI error. I don't know how you would fix that, but hopefully it's a start in the right direction.
Do any textures load when you create them? Just a bitmap on a primitive object? Or just the Lynda files? If it's the former, it might be a deeper issue (like graphics card), or maybe you're not texturing it correctly. Test it out on a basic level (prims) to make sure it works on your system/with your method. Ahh, I did not realize macOS was the new version, it's all just OSX in my head.
According to Maya 2017 is supported on AppleĀ® Mac OSĀ® X 10.10.5, and 10.11.x operating system. Ahh, I did not realize macOS was the new version Sierra is 10.12, and unfortunately my personal machine's been updated for a while, and my work machine just got updated last week.
It's not that new, it's nearing a year since it's initial release (so shame on Autodesk). Do any textures load when you create them? If I add a texture from an image file, that works correctly. If I save that scene, close it and reopen it, then the image/texture won't load. Ditto the class's example files. I'm resigning myself to the fact that I'll probably have to install on Windows. Sometimes this sub seems to be straight out of.
We can't help you with the information you gave us. It's like saying 'My PDF looks weird when I open it, does anyone know how to fix it?'
I thought the install error was well-known enough but I've gone ahead and linked it in a previous comment. I also don't think it's germane to issue I'm facing, as Autodesk itself said it wasn't a problem if the program loads (which clearly it did from my comment), according to their help page. I included the exact wordage for the 2016 error. I uninstalled 2017 before hand as googling suggested 2017 isn't compatible with Sierra, so I didn't have it in front of me, but I went through my search history for the day and pulled them too (right as you left your comment, in fact). Doesn't mention what the errors were when asking for help I think you didn't bother actually reading my comment, because I did actually copy the error for file load under 16. I decided to give up on 2017, and decided maybe I can do the 2016 class, so I install Maya 2016. No errors on install, but opening any file pops an error, 'Errors have occurred while reading this scene that may result in data loss.
Please check the Script Editor for details.' Like, I'm not even at the point where I'm playing with the script editor yet, so if I need to pull stuff from there, maybe telling me to do so is better than snark? Just a thought. I mean, I tried to troubleshoot myself, uninstalled 2017 and 2016 multiple times, and clearly researched the issue - hence all the links. It's not like this is a complex or intimidating piece of software.
Having worked in tech support, it's easy to be snarky, I suppose, but the fact is, if you bothered to read my comment before replying yourself, for being three days into the program, you'd see that I left all the germane information about 2016, at least. And honestly, is it less effort to be condescending about it than replying in a manner like?
